government on watch for a credit downgrade; Ezra argues that it makes perfect sense to downgrade America’s political system. But how does the United States stack up internationally? For that we turn to the BlackRock Investment Institute, the research arm of the giant money manager. It has created the “BlackRock Sovereign Risk Index” which aims to combine key aspects of creditworthiness of 48 countries around the world. It factors in plenty of things that have to do with the substance of different countries’ finances, such as their current debt and deficit levels, banking system strength, and exposure to debt denominated in foreign currencies. But it also adds an important layer that it calls “Willingness to Pay.” It measures the effectiveness and efficiency of governments to meet their obligations, and counts for 30 percent of the total index. Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising after the last couple of weeks of government shutdown and debt ceiling chicanery in Washington, but by BlackRock’s reckoning, the United States is not among the top-tier credit risks by this ranking. Here’s a complete map: You can check the detailed analysis for each country in an interactive graphic here . By BlackRock’s reckoning, the world’s most creditworthy nations–those with both solid finances and solid political systems that ensure bonds will be repaid–are the likes of Norway, Singapore, and Switzerland. The United States, as the map shows, is in the second tier, more similar to South Korea and Austria and Malaysia in its creditworthiness. For anyone who follows the news, it is hard to disagree. Ghana eliminating the US from the World Cup has become a tradition, and it’s that reason why I don’t ever again want to see the two paired in the same group. Of the 50 simulations I ran, 11 of them placed Ghana and the United States in the same group. These predictions also included countries such as Germany, Belgium, Argentina, France, and Italy. Fate could be very cruel to the US. 2014 World Cup simulations for the United States: I’ll take it! Not all of the simulations I got were bad news for the US. Here are the groups that any American fan should take in a heartbeat. US, Germany, Ecuador, Croatia. Six or even seven points is a realistic outcome for the US here. Croatia are good, but they aren’t nearly as good as some believe them to be. US, Germany, Ukraine, Chile. Second place is the new first! US, Ivory Coast, Switzerland, Bosnia & Herzegovina. US, Switzerland, England, Ecuador.
Whipped up options Smoothies arent just for breakfast. Whipping one up and taking it with you can be a great way to sidestep processed alternatives. For the best nutritional balance, and to stay full and satisfied, include a combination of good carbs, lean protein, and healthy fat. Reach for: frozen fruit and a handful of leafy greens; organic skim milk or almond milk and a plant-based protein powder like pea protein; a dollop of almond butter; and a small scoop of old fashioned rolled oats. To add flavor, aroma, and an extra dose of antioxidants, season your smoothie with spices, like cinnamon or ginger. For convenience, make a few smoothies at a time, stock them in the freezer, then transfer to the fridge to thaw a bit before you head out the door. Health.com: 11 Easy, Healthy Smoothie Recipes Make ahead re-heats Many of my clients have time to cook on weekends, but not so much during the week. To resist the temptation to grab fast food or order take-out Monday through Friday, I recommend making homemade frozen dinners that can be re-heated when needed, from soup or chili to stuffed peppers. Simple stews are another great option. For a single serving, saute a few cups of veggies in a saucepan, in a little extra virgin olive oil, along with minced garlic and herbs. Add low sodium organic vegetable broth, bring to a quick boil, then reduce to a simmer. Add a small scoop of a healthy starch, like wild rice or cubed baked sweet potato, and a cooked lean protein, such as lentils, cubed chicken breast, or extra lean ground turkey. Ladle into a BPA free freezable container, and your future meal will be ready in minutes. Cynthia Sass is a registered dietitian with masters degrees in both nutrition science and public health. There is clearly enormous “destitution, hardship and hunger” in Britain, says Oxfam. Even the International Red Cross has got involved, promising to help tackle Britain’s “food poverty”. What next a charity single along the lines of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, only aimed at getting emergency food to allegedly starving Brits rather than actually starving Africans? Heres something about the rise of food banks and the hand-wringing over “Starving Britain” that doesn’t make sense. For the past five years we’ve been told that Britain, especially the poor bits, is suffering from an obesity epidemic. Our children, especially the “white trash” ones , as Jamie Oliver called them, are gorging themselves into an early grave on turkey twizzlers, campaigners claimed. The Guardian, which has been at the forefront of publishing tear-stained articles about the food bank-using masses, has a whole section of its website devoted to “The obesity crisis” , where you can read articles about the “fat capital of Britain” (Tamworth in the Midlands) and the need for an obesity tsar to address the “massive and multi-factor problem of corpulent Blighty. Those articles were published this year, five years into the recession, and theyre illustrated with photos of usually poor fat people. I wish the moralistic pitiers of the less well-off would make up their minds are the poor dangerously fat or dangerously underfed? Heres another thing about the food-bank stuff that feels weird. For years weve been told that the problem in Britain is that food is too cheap. Thats not something Ive ever gone along with the cheaper the better, in my view but it has certainly been a concern of the very same class of people now claiming that hundreds of thousands of Brits cannot afford food.

“I’m a believer I think in allowing it happen, if under the auspices if it doesn’t work, if it is a congestion, knowing at that point that the city can pull the trigger and say look we tried it, it’s not going to work.” THE CITY’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR SAID – IF ALL GOES AS PLANNED – PEOPLE COULD BE ENJOYING CONCERTS HERE AS EARLY AS NEXT SUMMER. LIVE IN SOUTH PORTLAND, JIM KEITHLEY, WMTW Theres a plan to turn Bug Light Park into a concert venue between the Liberty Ship Memorial and the Portland Pipeline Pier. Related Some said the expansive area in South Portland is the perfect spot to host 8,000 to 10,000 people. It could become the biggest concert venue around. City planners released an artists rendering showing what an outdoor waterfront amphitheater might look like. Thousand people here, like near my house? asked Dierdree Glassford, a South Portland resident. Are they going to be on my lawn? The venue would be in the Springpoint neighborhood, an area that already has several restaurants, a bar, a community college and plenty of residents. The hope is to create a venue that will rival the successful Waterfront Concert Series in Bangor, which is drawing A-list acts. We could probably sell more pizza, said Katie Potocki, who owns the 158 Picket Street Cafe. Potocki said bringing in 8,000 to 10,000 people is good for business. It would be an incredible thing to see that kind of energy down here and more people actually knowing that we are here, she said. The concert venue idea is in the early stages.

Cowen writes: The U.S. is experiencing ever greater economic inequality and the thinning of its middle class; Texas is already one of our most unequal states. Americas safety net is fraying under the weight of ballooning Social Security and Medicare costs; Texas safety net was built frayed. Americans are seeking a cheaper cost of living and a less regulated climate in which to do business; Texas has those in spades. And did we mention theres no state income tax? Cheap living is luring people to Texas along with jobs, he writes, saying Texas added 12 percent of all jobs nationwide with 274,700. The Americans heading to Texas and other cheap-living states are a bit like the mythical cowboys of our pastself-reliant, for better or worse, he writes. He acknowledges major downsides: Many Americans will have to downsize their living quarters involuntarily. People in the shrinking middle class who want to have more than one child may find the costs too high. There is no longer the expectation, much less the guarantee, that living standards double or even increase much with each generation. But its not all bad newsespecially if we take the right steps to prepare. The flood of Americans moving to Texas shows us where we need to focus our attention; what these migrants have found in Texas shows us ways many of our cities and states can improve. He says the public education system must be more rigorous, and other states also can incorporate some of the lessons Texas has to teach. He says states could deregulate building in order to lower costs (San Francisco needs to become more like Houston when it comes to zoning) and cut down on occupational licensing. A little more freedom in strategically targeted areasthat is, a little more Texascould go a long way, Cowen writes.

Part of the reason fracking is cost effective is because the oil futures markets have pushed the price of crude oil over $100 per barrel on the open market. Plus, only some of the fracking equipment has been shifted over from hunting for natural gas. High Gas Prices: A US Political Problem But you would assume since the United States now exports more oil than it imports that the economic rules of supply and demand should cause US gas prices to drop, right? Unfortunately, thats where localized markets and politics have kept gas prices high. Most of the surge in United States oil product has occurred in North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Oil producers are fighting over limited oil pipeline capacity and are forced to use barges and trains, which increases the cost of domestic US oil by around $17 per barrel. But projects like the Keystone XL oil pipeline have been delayed by years due to politics. While the majority of countries have been greatly expanding their oil refining capabilities the United States has lagged behind. The last US oil refinery was built in 2008 , with the previous refinery going back to 1998. Fortunately, oil refining capacity has increased in existing refineries through upgrades or new construction but the United States still has to have a good percentage of its domestic oil refined in other countries . US refineries were also modified to take more heavy and sour crude from the Middle East and Canada, while our domestic oil requires refineries designed for light and sweet oil (meaning, lower density and sulphur content).
And the city says such rentals are cheating the city of lodging taxes. Since the mayor’s office began examining short-term rentals in 2006, it has fielded more than 3,000 complaints and issued almost 6,000 notices of violation, including fire, safety and occupancy infractions, which carry fines. Airbnb says 87 percent of hosts in New York share the space they live in with guests. The company has called the subpoena of customer information by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman an “unfounded fishing expedition” and says hosts are responsible for following varying laws around the world. NYC & Company, the city’s official tourism agency, issued a statement saying, “This illegal practice takes away much needed hotel tax revenue from city coffers with no consumer protections against fire- and health-code violations.” Neither city officials nor hotel organizations would estimate how much revenue hotels and the city might be losing. Landlords and tenant organizations have long complained that short-term sublets are a violation of most leases and a security issue. Having strangers coming in and out of a residential building “is a terrible problem,” says Tom Cayler, chairman of the Illegal Hotel Committee for Manhattan’s West Side Neighborhood Alliance. “If you come home at night and there are people in the lobby or elevator who you don’t know, you should be scared.” Sam Shaber, a musician who rented space on the Lower East Side for $150 to $225 a night, says she welcomed guests from France, Argentina, Sweden and elsewhere. And she said she always got a good sense of them from online exchanges and profiles before handing over the keys. “In this day and age of Craigslist, we have a radar for who’s weird,” Shaber said. “We never had one problem.” Airbnb renters say they can offer an experience hotels can’t the opportunity to live like a native in funky neighborhoods off the beaten tourist paths. Sergio Verdasco, 33, a mechanical engineer in San Sebastian, Spain, was hosted by Farer in Williamsburg for three nights. “It was an amazing experience a soft landing in a city where I don’t know the people and don’t speak the language well,” he said by phone.
The Court of Appeals did not say why it had agreed to hear the appeal. The law would have barred restaurants, movie theaters, food carts and other businesses regulated by the city’s health department from selling sodas and other sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces (473 ml). In March, just one day before it was to take effect, a state judge found the policy to be illegal. A mid-level state appeals court agreed in July that the city’s mayoral-appointed health board had exceeded its authority when it approved the new regulation. It also noted that loopholes would have exempted grocery and convenience stores, such as 7-Eleven, known for its 64-ounce (1.9 liter) Big Gulp, as well as high-calorie milkshakes and coffee drinks, such as Starbucks Frappuccinos. The ruling was a victory for companies including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper Snapple, which had argued that the law would do little to address obesity while imposing unnecessary costs. The restaurant industry and several business groups also had filed papers in support of the lawsuit. Bloomberg said on Thursday he expects the state’s top court to overturn the lower-court rulings. The soda ban “would help save lives, and we are confident the Appeals court will uphold the Board of Health’s rule,” he said in a statement, noting that excessive soda consumption is linked to obesity and diabetes, which kill at least 5,000 New Yorkers each year. A spokesman for the American Beverage Association, a trade group and the lead plaintiff in the case, said the group looked forward to a final decision on the ban. The city had argued that the lower appeals court had ignored decades of case law establishing that the health board has unique powers to regulate public health.

D.O.M., his restaurant in Sao Paulo, ranks No. 6 on San Pellegrinos list of the Worlds Best Restaurants (it was No. 4 last year). His $300-per-person private dinner at the festival tomorrow, A Night at D.O.M., sold out quickly after tickets went on sale in May. The dinner, sponsored by Bank of America , will feature some of Atalas signature dishes such as heart-of-palm fettuccine carbonara and lime-and-banana ravioli. Im super happy that chefs and critics are open to Amazonian ingredients, said Atala, a former amateur boxer and disc jockey who discovered a love for cooking through a backpacking trip in Europe. Charity Time With his success, Atala makes time for charity. His treks in the Amazon introduced him to deforestation. He sends food regularly to indigenous people, including the Baniwa Indians . Its my way to say to people, please its super important to try to give back, Atala said. This year, he traveled to New York to cook alongside Daniel Boulud and Daniel Humm at a fundraiser for the Brazil-based Pele Little Prince Research Institute that provides health care to children. Atala did a cooking demonstration in New York last week for Gastromotiva , a Sao Paulo-based program that teaches culinary skills to underprivileged young adults. He has hired some of its graduates. Think Tank Last year, Atala started his nonprofit ATA Institute, a think tank that promotes fair-trade practices in the Amazon region and aims to improve the lives of its residents.
To arrive at the final 25, we factored in the number of average unique visitors (this accounted for 50 percent of each blogs score) and the data from the three social media components (which accounted for the remaining 50 percent). The blogs with the highest total scores made the cut. While the list didnt change dramatically from last year, there were a few notable differences. The Kitchn made a leap from number six up to number two, and Picky Palate jumped from number 12 up to number five on our list. Skinnytaste , which ranked third last year, fell to number 10 this year, and David Lebovitz , whose star just keeps rising, jumped from number 11 up to number six. Simply Recipes held onto the top spot for the fourth year in a row. There were also several newcomers, while others fell off the list entirely. This year we welcome Bakers Royale , Chocolate & Zucchini , Elanas Pantry , Food52 , Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef , Simple Bites , and Thug Kitchen to our list, while we say goodbye to Annies Eats , Gluten-Free Goddess, Mommys Kitchen , Our Best Bites , Pinch My Salt, TasteSpotting , and A Year of Slow Cooking. Falling off our list in no way indicates a drop in quality; reasons vary from blog to blog. Some have slowed down the rate of posting entries; others have simply been surpassed by other blogs in traffic. The blogs on our list offer everything from recipes to breaking restaurant news to simple musings about life and food, but theyre all worthy of being on your radar if you love food. 1Simply Recipes Simply Recipes A virtual recipe box of founder Elise Bauers favorite homespun dishes, Simply Recipes features her tried-and-true recipes, along with those crafted by family and friends.
His tip? “Make sure you sort through the schedule and get tickets to events that suit your taste buds, whether you love burgers or tacos or pizza, or you prefer a more intimate dinner with a renowned chef and winemaker.” What if it’s your first time attending the festival? “I wouldn’t recommend attending more than one or two events per day to ensure you have time to fully enjoy everything.” Know how to get around New York City is over 300-square-miles of skyscrapers and rushing crowds. It can be easy to get lost, but luckily we live in the age of smartphones, which help even the most directionally-challenged among us at least look like we know where we’re going. Andrew Zimmern, host of the festival’s Oktoberfest event, recommends a few apps to make your life easier. “It’s great to keep an itinerary on your smartphone with links to the venues you’ll be visiting, so you’ll always have the addresses handy. Uber is a great app to have on hand for transport. Just request a car when you need it and they’ll send one right to you.” Want to take mass transit for an authentic NYC experience? “The Embark NYC app will help you navigate the subway system.” And if you’d rather take a cab? “Be sure to download HAILO.” NEW YORK CITY: The complete foodie travel guide Drink water It may seem obvious, but it can be hard to gauge how much alcohol you’re actually drinking when it’s just a swig of beer here, a sip of wine there at these tastings. Elizabeth A. Karmel, Executive Chef of Hill Country Barbecue Market, recommends drinking “four to five bottles of water before you go to any event that serves alcohol, that way you are completely hydrated and will be less likely to over-imbibe”. Another way to avoid being the guy falling asleep at the wine tasting? “Start the day off with a solid meal,” she advises. Dress appropriately Sounds like our food experts dabble in fashion as well.
Separated from the far eastern edge of the Russian empire by only the narrow Bering Strait, the Russians had been the first Europeans to significantly explore and develop Alaska. During the early 19th century, the state-sponsored Russian-American Company established the settlement of Sitka and began a lucrative fur trade with the Native Americans . However, Russian settlement in Alaska remained small, never exceeding more than a few hundred people. By the 1860s, the Russian-American Company had become unprofitable. Faced with having to heavily subsidize the company if an active Russian presence in the territory was to be maintained, the tsar and his ministers chose instead to sell to the Americans. Seeing the giant Alaska territory as a chance to cheaply expand the size of the nation, William H. Seward, President Andrew Johnson ‘s secretary of state, moved to arrange the purchase of Alaska. Agreeing to pay a mere $7 million for some 591,000 square miles of land-a territory twice the size of Texas and equal to nearly a fifth of the continental United States-Seward secured the purchase of Alaska at the ridiculously low rate of less than 2 an acre. Later myths to the contrary, most Americans recognized that Seward had made a smart deal with the Alaska Purchase. Still, a few ill-informed critics did not miss the opportunity to needle the Johnson administration by calling the purchase “Seward’s Folly” and “Seward’s Icebox,” or joking that the administration had only bought the territory to create new political appointments like a “Polar Bear’s Bureau” and a “Superintendent of Walruses.” Johnson’s opponents (who were trying to impeach him at the time) also succeeded in delaying approval of the $7 million appropriation. But after a year of squabbling, Congress approved the purchase, and Russia formally transferred control of the vast northern land to the United States. Within a few decades, Alaska would prove to be an amazing treasure trove of natural resources from gold to oil, proving Seward’s wisdom and exposing the shortsightedness of those who had once poked fun at the purchase.
Mexico (2-3-5) finished fourth with 11 points, three ahead of Panama (1-4-5). Before allowing the stoppage-time goals, Panama was even with El Tri on points and goal difference and would have reached the playoff based on a 10-7 advantage in goals scored. CARLOS JASSO/REUTERS RELATED: BRADLEY’S WORLD CUP DREAM WITH EGYPT IN TATTERS Having earned its seventh straight World Cup berth last month, the U.S. was without many of its regulars because of either injuries or decisions to allow them to return to their clubs. Among the missing were Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Tim Howard, Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler. In all, the Americans started just two players who began the clinching match against Mexico: defender Clarence Goodson and midfielder Alejandro Bedoya. In the absence of Dempsey and Howard, Jozy Altidore captained the national team for the first time. It was an opportunity for us to see some players stepping in, Klinsmann said, Panama got the early goal when Marcos Sanchez sent a layoff to the top of the penalty area, and Torres split the defenders and easily beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan with a one-timed shot to the corner. Orozco scored his third international goal off a Davis corner kick. Sacha Kljestan was hauled down by Luis Henriquez right in front of the goal, allowing the ball to fall to Orozco. With his back toward the goal, Orozco lifted his left leg and made just enough contact to score from 6 yards. Orozco then did a little dance with DaMarcus Beasley, the American left back of late who was given the night off. Panama could have been awarded a penalty kick two minutes later, but Jamaican referee Courtney Campbell didnt whistle Bedoya for knocking over Alberto Quintero as he streaked into the penalty area. Two minutes later, Guzan got his left hand up to stop a point-blank shot by Torres. Panama came back when Torres sent the ball down the right flank to Roberto Chen, who sent a low cross through the penalty area.
In fact, the US met 89 percent of its own energy needs in March of 2013 and as of now is the worlds largest oil producer , surpassing even Saudia Arabia according to the PIRA Energy Group: (The U.S.) growth rate is greater than the sum of the growth of the next nine fastest growing countries combined and has covered most of the worlds net demand growth over the past two years. The U.S. position as the largest oil supplier in the world looks to be secure for many years. To give you an idea how fast this happened, news reports from earlier late last year estimated this wouldnt happen until 2020. And China just recently surpassed the United States as the biggest oil importer. United States oil production should average 12.1 million barrels per day in 2013, but how come US gas prices are still so high? While fracking shale oil has gotten much cheaper and efficient its still more costly than the relatively easy-to-reach Middle East oil. The average fracking rig is mounted on a 18-wheeler truck and has the horsepower of three Formula One racing cars necessary to raise the hydraulic pressure high enough. It takes about 10 days to drill a well while years ago it took over 15 days.
… Samuel Morse’s telegraph that allowed the transmission of information from one corner of America to the other in seconds changed everything. And, of course, it led the way to the telephone and radio and television and, of course, to the Internet. So Samuel Morse: hugely important figure. On two American presidents and one massive road system This remarkable, curmudgeonly man Thomas MacDonald who was the chief of the Bureau of Roads was called into the Oval Office by FDR, who unrolled an enormous map and drew, with a chinagraph pencil, three lines east and west, five lines north and south and said to MacDonald, “Build me a road system along those lines.” But it was actually Eisenhower who, long before that, had the first idea of the system, and that was in 1919. Just after the first world war, the American National War College was somewhat afraid that … the United States might be attacked by an “Asiatic enemy,” and by that presumably they meant the Japanese. How do we get troops as rapidly as possible across the country by such roads or railways as exist? So they assembled a convoy 3 miles long, and they trundled off westward as fast as they could. But of course west of Omaha there were no roads and bridges kept breaking, and it was a complete disaster. It took 58 days for them to reach San Francisco at an average speed of 5 1/2 miles an hour.
The District, unlike every other state, county, and city is prohibited from using its own locally-raised funds without Congressional approval. The end of the government shutdown averts a funding crisis for the city. The federal government is asking the press to inform federal workers that the government shutdown is over. It is official the United States of America federal government shutdown is over. President Barack Obama said the shutdown will end immediately after he signs the law tonight. Federal workers will return to work immediately. Although there are some Americans who believe that the shutdown was about motives other than stopping the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act; it is proven that two million Americans signed a petition to defund the act because they sincerely believe that it will destroy small business in America. Examiner.com will continue to research and investigate the act and the charges that it will hurt millions of American families. “This fight was about the healthcare act. It was always about the healthcare act,” a Senate spokesman said. President Barack Obama spoke to the press shortly after the senate vote. “I want to thank the leaders of both parties,” Obama said.
The interview was published Wednesday. However, Fahmy said he was “not worried about this turmoil in relations,” because it’s also a chance for the two to “better evaluate their relationship in the future.” The Obama administration’s decision to cut off military aid was meant as a warning that it no longer can be “business as usual” with Cairo, as President Barack Obama put it last week. In announcing the decision, the State Department did not say how much of the $1.5 billion in annual military and economic aid to Egypt was affected. It held up the delivery of Apache helicopters, F-16 fighter jets, M1A1 Abrams tank kits, which are put together in Egyptian factories, and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. But the U.S. decision is more of a symbolic slap than a punishing wound to Egypt’s new military-backed government for its slog toward a return to democratic rule. The military-backed government enjoys the support of wealthy Gulf Arab states such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. These oil-rich states have poured billions of dollars into Egypt’s anemic coffers and to continue the common fight against Islamists. The U.S. also is withholding $260 million in cash assistance to the government in Cairo until “credible progress” is made toward an inclusive government set up through free and fair elections. The U.S. said it will keep providing support for health and education and counterterrorism, spare military parts, military training and border security and security assistance in the volatile Sinai Peninsula. Near-daily attacks against Egyptian security forces and soldiers in Sinai have increasingly resembled a full-fledged insurgency.
Four years ago, a late goal by William Gallas sent France to the World Cup and broke Irish hearts after television replays showed that Thierry Henry had clearly handled the ball before crossing for Gallas’ goal. France will not be seeded in next week’s draw and could face difficult opposition like Portugal or Ukraine. But on this form, no team will want to face France, especially with the way Franck Ribery is playing and now that strikers Karim Benzema and Olivier Giroud are both scoring. “We used the ball well, we used the width well with our fullbacks and we controlled possession,” Deschamps said. “In terms of our attacking play, our presence in front of goal, we had an enormous amount of possession. We could have scored more as we created a lot of chances.” After five matches without scoring, major doubts were raised about Deschamps’ team, but the turnaround has been spectacular since the dire first half against Belarus last month. France woke up in that game and went on to win 4-2, then thrashed Australia 6-0 on Friday night. “We are much more in control than we were before,” Deschamps said. “The players are in really good shape at the moment, as well. I hope nothing happens to any of them and that they’ll all be here next month.” In the past two games, Giroud and Benzema have scored twice – with Giroud also contributing to France’s second goal on Tuesday night when his header led to an own goal – while Ribery has been simply unstoppable. “All of the forwards showed good movement,” Deschamps said.
That gives Air France considerable leverage. The Franco-Dutch carrier was barred from a full takeover of Alitalia in late 2008 by then prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. Alitalia has lost 700,000 euros a day since then and Italy’s current government and Alitalia shareholders hope to persuade Air France to join the capital increase. So far the parties have failed to agree financial commitments and business strategy. Alitalia wants to reposition itself in the higher-margin long-haul market after losing out on regional and domestic routes to competition from low-cost carriers and high-speed trains. That plan appears to clash with Air France’s demands for much tougher restructuring and debt-cutting measures. Analysts have said the logical way to save the Italian carrier would be for Air France-KLM to take over the operating core of the airline and get rid of the entire Alitalia back-office structure, However, that would mean severe cost cuts and job losses, which Rome and unions are likely to oppose. If Air France-KLM does not participate in the share issue, it could be overtaken by the Italian post office as the top investor and its own stake could drop to below 15 percent. This would effectively cost the company its veto power on any new shareholders coming in. If Alitalia were to fail, Air France-KLM would lose access to Europe’s fourth-largest travel market. But with Air France in the middle of a tough restructuring itself, that decision will be a close.
